Renee Rosnes & Bill Charlap: Double Portrait ( piano-centric weekend )
|
It's "a delicate business", there's "a lot of nonverbal communication" & "clarity" is crucial when husband & wife apply 20 fingers to 176 keys. Renee Rosnes & Bill Charlap's loving hands make sublime duo music on Double Portrait, the heart of our piano-focused weekend's 2nd chapter.
Individually, each is one of the finer, more sensitive jazz pianists.
"Bill Charlap approaches a song the way a lover approaches his beloved" said Time magazine.
"Rosnes offers exquisite balances of delicacy and power, witty and weighted ideas, assertiveness and deference" said Down Beat magazine.
Together, they are a very special duo.

Cuban: power-packed but also-lyrical solo piano, with the player occasionally vocalising wordlessly. Dedicated to a Yoruba deity; she is goddess of love & waters, among other things.
Chucho recorded this extraordinary, all-solo album in Europe in 1986. Courtesy of the 'Cuban boycott', for some years it was the only readily-available album on which the world in general could hear Cuba's greatest pianist play a really good grand piano, recorded properly.

LIKE TO KNOW ABOUT THE ACTUAL FEUD?
As one source says, 'America's most historic feud, the Hatfield and McCoy saga ( decades-long, in eastern Kentucky ) looks somewhat like a Sunday afternoon picnic when compared to the Maxwell family's legendary ( century-long ) feud with its Scottish borderland neighbors, the Johnstones.
Its history is well-told, here:
